Recycling is Rewarding in Montgomery
I want to participate in RecycleBank!
The City of Montgomery is all familiar with the old adage “one mans trash another mans treasure.” This new recycling pilot program is trying to change that. Your trash is your own treasure, ‘cause RecycleBank
is going to provide you with rewards for recycling. The concept, called Incentive Based Recycling, is to increase recycling rates by providing a direct financial incentive for people to go through the trouble of sorting their garbage. This pilot program will provide customers with a 64 gallon recycling container with wheels, fitted with a barcode that identifies their home including a RecycleBank
online account number.
Rumpke trucks are equipped with specifically designed computers. The computers scan the chip, calculate the weight of the recycled materials, store the information in a database, and credit the household for the amount of materials recycled. This credit amount becomes RecycleBank
'Reward Points.' Participating households can earn hundreds of dollars in Reward value each year through recycling . These Rewards can then be redeemed at participating local and national businesses, including Dick's Sporting Goods, CVS/Pharmacy, Home Depot and more.
Participants log on to the RecycleBank.com website and choose from hundreds of meaningful reward choices. Rewards come in the form of a reward mailer sent directly to the home, or as an email promo code in the case of online rewards. Either way, recycling is rewarding. Alternatively participants can choose to donate their RecycleBank
Reward Points to charity. In addition, customers can determine the environmental impact of their recycling efforts by checking their accounts and seeing how many trees and gallons of oil their efforts have helped to conserve.
The more you recycle, the more reward you get (up to a point, at least) and the less stuff goes to the landfill.
City Staff, Rumpke and the Montgomery Citizens’ Environmental Advisory Commission will be holding a public education forum to distributing information on the new recycling program coming to Montgomery. If you would like to attend the open house, the schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday, July 22nd, 4 – 7 p.m., Terwilliger Lodge
In October, Rumpke’s crew will be delivering the recycling toter to the curbside of each resident. Please complete the registration form if you would like to participate.
